‘Astronomy 2009′ island is a project of the International Year of Astronomy 2009 New Media Task Group managed by Dr. Pamela Gay of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and the popular Astronomy Cast. Adrienne Gauthier (SL: Ourania Fizgig) of the Department of Astronomy at The University of Arizona is the manager, designer, and curator of the astronomy themed island that resides in the SciLands community of the virtual world called Second Life.  She is joined by lead builder/scripter David Huber (SL: Alan Myhre), a talented undergraduate student at the UA.

During IYA2009 the project is sponsored by the American Astronomical Society, The University of Arizona Department of Astronomy, Interstellar Studios, Spitzer Space Telescope, Chandra X-ray Observatory, and private SL citizen Helio Huet. Management of the project is through the IYA2009 New Media Task Group.

In 2010, this project will continue under the management of Astrosphere New Media Association and the sponsorship of the American Astronomical Society as a “legacy” IYA2009 project. Ms. Gauthier will continue to be lead manager and designer with Mr. Huber as lead builder/scripter.
